Holiday Traditions Are Timeless Not Instant Hits

Creating new Holiday traditions, isn't easy. No one really expects it to be. Those brave souls writing holiday tales, poems, songs or scripts can take heart from the story of American journalism's best-known Holiday editorial, the New York Sun's "Is There A Santa Clause?". The paper first published the editorial in 1897 then reprinted it sporadically until the 1920's then annually until the paper ceased publication in 1950. The story behind this much beloved Holiday tradition is an inspirational and cautionary one.

"Readers, not newspaper editors, helped make sure Is There A Santa Claus? lived on," says W. Joseph Campbell, a professor of journalism at American University whose research offers a fuller and more accurate understanding of the famous editorial than was previously available.
